Nature-inclusive mile post
Het concept
The nature-inclusive, bio-based mile markers transform a standard road object into a modular system that enhances biodiversity. The design consists of a hemp composite sign with interchangeable biodiversity cassettes for bees, ladybirds, and microhabitats.
The system is industrially manufacturable, easy to maintain, and designed for a long lifespan. In doing so, the project demonstrates how roadside infrastructure can be executed in bio-based materials with ecological value, aligning with the ambitions of Rijkswaterstaat.

Schaalbaarheid
The mile marker is fully bio-based, carbon-negative, and produced within a short, regional supply chain. Thanks to its modular design, components can go through multiple life cycles. The biodiversity cassette provides optional ecological value without affecting road safety or maintenance.
Impact
This project aligns with the national target to produce at least 10% of roadside furniture from bio-based materials by 2030, as well as with Rijkswaterstaat’s ambition to utilise and enhance the ecological function of roadside verges where possible and safe.
