Habitat bench
Het concept
The habitat bench is a circular bench that functions not only as a seating element, but also as a habitat for a wide range of species.
At the heart of the bench, stacked deadwood is integrated, providing space for insects, fungi, microorganisms, birds, and small mammals.
In this way, it becomes a meeting place where social interaction and ecological value come together.
Onderzoek & context
For this project, research was conducted into the ecological qualities of the area surrounding the Professor Doctor Dorgelolaan parking area.
Through fieldwork and an ecological scan, the importance of deadwood within the existing ecosystem became apparent.
Based on these insights, the habitat bench emerged: a design that intentionally creates space for deadwood, without it being perceived as neglected maintenance.

Context & status
Developed in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team as part of my master’s graduation project. The design method is being further developed within Operatie Regeneratie.
